Geographical Location

Nepal is a landlocked country. It lies between the two powerful nations of India and China; China to north and India to east, west and south. Nepal shares an open border with India. Nepal’s geography varies from low altitude plains in the Terai, to lush forest in the hilly region, to towering mountains in the Himalayas. Eight of the ten highest peaks in the world are in Nepal, including the highest – Mount Everest.

Language

Nepal is a multicultural and multilingual nation. The national language is Nepali, but as you travel through the different regions of Nepal, you will find different local languages, culture and lifestyle.

Climate

The climate of Nepal can be classified into four distinct seasons:

  • Spring: March to May
  • Summer: June to August
  • Autumn: September to November
  • Winter: December to February

People and religion

Nepal is a multicultural nation, with many different people and religions. Broadly, the different ethnic groups can be divided into two types: Indo-Aryans and Mongoloids (Kirat). Modern day Nepal is a secular nation, but before 2007 it was a Hindu Kingdom. Hinduism is predominant, but Buddhism is not far behind considering the Buddha’s birthplace – Lumbini – is located in southern Nepal. Some Christian and Muslim influence can also be seen, along with local traditions in some remote communities.

The currency of Nepal is Nepali Rupees. The Nepali rupee comes in the denominations of NRs.1, NRs. 2, NRs.5, NRs.10, NRs.20, NRs.50, NRs.100, NRs.500 and NRs.1000. For NRs.1 and NRs. 2, coins are frequently used.
